Former Highbury educators celebrate blessed marriage

Ann and Ian Kerley celebrate diamond anniversary.

SHOPPING is not a hobby for most men but Hillcrest resident, Ian Kerley, enjoys it and that has scored him some points with his wife of 60 years, Ann.

Ann and Ian described their journey as a blessed one as they both have the same interests.

Even though the couple do not have any children, they have been surrounded by many loving people and have taken care of many boys like their own as they both taught at Highbury Preparatory School for 24 years.

Ian grew up in South Africa and the two love birds met at a College in Bradford, England.

They were both riding in a lorry when Ian was impressed by Ann and they dated for two years before getting married on 28 March 1959.

“During those two years, I worked in London for a year but we still kept in touch. The natural course of events led to us being married. It just felt natural to be together as we both love the same things.

“There were no bells ringing or stars shining, we just gelled automatically,” said Ian.

Ann said the trait she loves the most about Ian is his kindness. “He loves animals and my mother liked him.”

“We have had a lovely time together and married couples should like each other as well as love each other which means they should be good friends. Sharing the same interests is vital for married couples. With us we are committed Christians and love walking and travelling,” said Ann.

When the Kerleys were younger, riding horses was a very important hobby in their lives and it shows with the paintings and horse-themed decorations around their sitting room.

They will be celebrating their anniversary surrounded by special friends who have made them their family.

“Even though we have been retired for 25 years, Highbury is still a big part of us and they always invite us to special ceremonies. We have been blessed by all the people who makes us feel special and include us in their lives, we are part of a very big family,” said Ian.
