Environmental Affairs visit Clermont Eco champs

The delegation also took the opportunity to visit one of the Community Ablution Blocks (CAB) where the disposable nappies are being collected.

A TEAM from the National Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) in Pretoria visited the Aller River Project in Clermont to see the progress made in the Disposable Nappies Sub-project and to review the plans for the extension of the project which is currently in the planning phase.

The team was led Mishelle Govender, and included Sharon Mogomotsi and Dr Shauna Costley.

Also present was Nonhle Ndebele from the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs as well as representatives of DSW led by Nana Ndlovu, DSW Education and Waste Minimisation manager.

The DEA and DSW delegations interacted with the project team including the Eco-champs who gave an update on the status quo of the project and presented some suggestions on the way forward.

“The delegation also took the opportunity to visit one of the Community Ablution Blocks (CAB) where the disposable nappies are being collected and they also interacted with the CAB Caretaker to find out her views on the project,” said Aller River project manager, Nick Swan.

“The Eco-champs were presented with the various certificates that they have earned in the formal training that they have done in the past year. The eco-champs’ main focus has been Environmental Practices towards an NQF Level 2 accredited training certificate,” added Swan.

They all did training with WESSA in 2017, amounting to 42 credits. Four eco-champs did further training with Pioneer Consulting in Pinetown this year, amounting to a further 50 credits.

All six eco-champs also recently completed eight Occupational Health and Safety training credits, “which can count towards the Environmental Practices certificate.
