City of Durban works to alleviate impact of illegal strike

eThekwini Municipality has debunked the rumour being spread on social media that tap water is unsafe to drink.

ETHEKWINI Municipality apologises to residents and the business community bearing the brunt of the illegal strike that resulted in the City being unable to provide basic services normally in certain areas.

City manager, Sipho Nzuza, assures that the municipality is doing everything in its power to ensure that services are provided and to this end, private contractors have been sourced to assist in restoring the provision of basic services.

“We have already started with refuse removal in the City centre today Tuesday (7 May).

Two private contractors and 100 volunteers have been employed to ensure refuse in and around the City centre are cleared within 24 hours.

The City is also prioritising refuse that is life-threatening and has hired contractors to assist us in its endeavour to provide water 24/7,” said Nzuza.

eThekwini appeals to residents not to take out their refuse until the strike is officially declared over.

Residents are asked to dispose of their garbage at the following landfill sites: Mariannhill, Ilovu and Buffelsdraai.

The municipality has debunked the rumour being spread on social media that tap water is unsafe to drink.

The City urges all its employees to resume their duties immediately while the labour dispute is being discussed at the central bargaining council.

The principle of no work no pay applies to all workers participating in the strike.
