Keep healthy and hygienic to avoid colds and flu
It is believed the average adult may get a cold and/or flu between two and five times a year, these tips will help you and your colleagues share healthier moments this winter.
SORE throats and coughs usually indicate that the cold and flu (Influenza) season is in full swing with those suffering having to see their doctors for medication to relieve the symptoms.
According to a study commissioned by Pharma Dynamics, almost 40 per cent of South Africa’s workforce might report off sick due to colds and flu.

The cost of treating these illnesses can also hit the consumer’s pocket.
Financial planning expert, Maya Fischer-French, said by August every year more than half of medical scheme members will have run out of day-to-day savings.
“Which means that doctor visits and medication would have to be paid for out of your own pocket,” added Fischer-French.
Dr LZ Njubane based in Clermont said about 30 per cent of his patients per day come for treatment for colds and flu in the winter season.
Viruses cause the colds and flu
Influenza viruses cause flu and the rhinoviruses are the most common causes of colds.
“In both, attacks can be reduced by good hygiene, mainly hand-washing, avoid over-crowding, educate people to avoid public places when they have these infections to avoid spreading it. Flu vaccines for influenza reduce chances of infection. There is no vaccine for colds,” said Njubane.

Wash your hands: If you have come in contact with someone who is sick, getting rid of the germs with a sanitising hand wash can stop a cold in its track. Use sanitising hand wipes or a hand sanitiser.
Keep germ hotspots clean at all times. These are your stationery, kitchen, bathrooms, office furniture, printer, telephone. Use hygiene soap, hand-sanitiser, hand-wipes and antiseptic liquid.
Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, especially door handles, handrails and taps.
Get enough sleep: A tired body is less able to fight a virus.
Light exercise: Research presented to the British Journal of Sports Medicine says that you are 50 per cent less likely to get a cold if you feel fit and active.
Taking caution against colds and flu every winter can help prevent long lasting infections and financial loss.
