Local NPO breaks world record
The Do More Foundation exceeded its goal of making 100 000 peanut butter sandwiches in an hour.
THE Do More Foundation made history on World Food Day as more than 2 500 volunteers and 50 organisations gathered across eight provinces to make 107 418 peanut butter sandwiches in one hour.
The aim of the event was to highlight food insecurity and the effect it has on 6.8 million South Africans.
The foundation, founded by RCL Foods, caused a massive chain reaction across the country with its World Food Day campaign as it broke the World Record of 57 000 sandwiches made in one hour that was set in the USA in February 2019.
The foundation not only facilitated 43 events across the country, but also provided more than 220 000 slices of Sunbake Bread, 1.7 tons of Rama and 1.7 tons of Yum Yum peanut butter to make the sandwiches.

The Do More Foundation’s executive, Warren Farrer, said, “The future of our country lies with our children. With more than 2.5 million children living below the food poverty line and many of them surviving on only one meal day, they will not be able to reach their full potential. It will rob a large part of our nation of their chances for a healthy and economically productive future. A peanut butter sandwich is the perfect snack for a young child and is certainly better than a packet of crisps, which we so often send with our children as a snack for school.”
When the hour was up, the 107 418 sandwiches were then distributed to beneficiaries such as the Early Childhood Development centres and underprivileged schools, selected by the volunteers and organisations involved in the campaign.
“The Do More Foundation has proven that with collective action in the right places, we really can do more to ease hunger – and that was the key message the foundation wanted to communicate on World Food Day,” said Warren.
