MORE than 80 000 learners from all over South Africa participated in the Horizon Maths Competition National Awards held at Wits University in Johannesburg.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga spoke about the department’s mandate to improve maths and science education in public schools. She highlighted the fact that the partnership between government and private schools and private sectors played a vital role in encouraging primary learners to participate in maths and science.
“I appreciate the Horizon Trust’s contribution, we have to make sure that maths and science are improved. I want to thank Horizon for putting maths, science and technology in the forefront,” said Motshekga. This year’s competition boasted 82 777 learners from Grade 5 to 7 who wrote from rural private schools from all provinces. The Horizon Maths Competition is an annual competition open to all schools in the country aimed at the advancement of mathematics.

“KwaZulu-Natal is proud to announce that we achieved second, third and fourth place nationally from our provincial competition held in June. We would like to congratulate Joel Jordan from Clifton Preparatory, William Ronnie from Manor Gardens Primary and Lerato Ndlovu from Pitlochry on their achievements,” said, Star College Horizon Mathematics representative in Durban, Sara Hayden.
The Horizon Educational Trust sponsored the learners’ trip to Johannesburg.
