St Mary’s celebrates its golden girl

Over and above her school commitments, Julia donated a further 72 hours of her time to help care for babies, children and the elderly.

ST Mary’s DSG’s Julia Purcell is its first learner to complete the coveted President’s Award at gold level.

In the last 12 months, Julia has completed the five requirements of this stringent programme – the majority of which were external to the school programme.

Throughout the year, Julia spent 72 hours in community service and visited many organisations where she helped care for babies, children and the elderly. The skill she chose to share was playing the recorder and the flute and she now plans to teach and entertain others.

Julia also improved her physical strength with yoga and learnt important exercises for strengthening and toning.

Her four-day adventurous journey lead her to hike alongside her group in the Magoeboskloof Reserve, where she had to carry her own backpack and make her own dinner.

On a daily basis, the group shared their highs and lows and discussed the challenges they faced.

The fifth requirement was to participate in a five-day residential project in Howick. She assisted by entertaining the children and also cleaned and helped where needed. Julia learnt how to be patient with children, to work efficiently and to be organised.

“Julia, your hours of hard work and dedication resulted in an incredible achievement and we are very proud of you,” said the school’s marketing and communications manager, Michelle Di Marco.
