Create some magic in 2020

Turn your New Year into one of giving by starting a fund-raiser in your workplace.

MAGIC is not something that is only found in a Harry Potter novel and you definitely do not need the assistance of a wand to turn nothing into something.

Having worked alongside dozens of non-profit organisations, I continuously hear the saying ‘ a little bit goes a long way’.

Half way through 2018 I decided to take this theory for a test drive. My colleagues were encouraged to donate absolutely every single 10 cent, 20 cent and 50 cent piece they could spare and, over the final six months of the year, we raised a total of R216. That doesn’t seem like a lot, does it? In the grand scheme of things, no it isn’t.

But, this was money that, on its own, amounts to literally nothing and would have probably found a permanent home in a someone’s drawer, handbag or cubbyhole. Come to think of it, a large chunk of that change was also found on the pavement, literally discarded.

As 2019 rolled in, the fund-raiser fever spread throughout the Highway Mail building. A competition quickly sprung up between our advertising department and the editorial department. Our overall goal was to reach at least R400 by the year’s end. Did we manage it? Of course we did! We smashed a grand total of R440.

As we welcome in the New Year, filled with copious amounts of hope and optimism, we have pushed our 2020 target to R800. Speaking to the Kloof and Highway SPCA, which holds a soft spot in my heart, the money we raised is used for either dog or cat food, tick and flea treatment or the medical treatment of stray animals.

Make a change:

I encourage you to go out and create your own magic in your workplace. Simply choose your charity, start your own ‘brown coin’ fund-raiser drive, encourage your colleagues and let us know how much you and your company have raised at the year end with a photo, caption and a total. This pictures can be sent to lloydm@dbn.caxton.co.za. All images submitted need to be larger than 1MB in size, no more than four people can appear in each photo and full names and surnames of each person must be included. Happy treasure hunting!
