Loving Pinetown couple share 50 years of marriage

Denny and Graham Hough exchanged their wedding vows in 1970 and, 50 years later, are still in love.

PINETOWN couple, Graham and Denny Hough, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, 3 October.

They first met at a house party in Durban North in the 60s and they both agreed they felt an instant connection and that there was something special between them.

They dated for about 18 months before Graham proposed on his 21st birthday in 1970.

The couple on their wedding day, on 3 October in 1970.

They exchanged their vows at the St Luke’s Congregational Church and then flew overseas for an extended honeymoon in the United Kingdom and Europe.

“We saved up while we were dating, bought a van and toured,” said Graham.

London was their home base, but they were only too eager to begin their European leg of the journey where they visited Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Italy, following the popular book, Europe on 5 Dollars a Day.

They were eager for a chilly experience, so they opted to take the trip during Europe’s winter months.

The loving couple said they travelled across the continent in their car and were armed with nothing more than a change of clothes, two cups, camping gas, one teaspoon and one pot.

On their way back to London, they handed over the keys and the logbook of their car to a group of young Italian men at the train station.

Of all of the places they have since travelled, their favourite trip was their honeymoon.

When she left school, Denny completed a commercial course in bookkeeping, accounting and typing.

At 50, Denny said it was her time and studied financial management through Varsity College and currently works for the non-profit organisation, Church Alliance for Social Transformation (C.A.S.T.), an affiliate of Westville Baptist Church.

Graham has been involved with sales for his entire life and, in 1991, the couple opened an upholstery business together.

“I still have the best man,” said Denny. “He is precious.” To which Graham replied, “I know.”

They have three children and six grandchildren and believe their marriage has remained strong throughout the years as God is the head of their marriage. They are still completely in love with each other.

“I tell him that I love him every day and he tells me that I ‘will get over it’. Well, I still haven’t gotten over it,” smiled Denny.
