Ruby plans to draw a bright future

Waterfall College's SPAR Star of the Month - October 2020.

WATERFALL College SPAR Star of the Month is Grade 12 learner, Ruby Reim.

She received eight awards at the school’s annual speech day recently and these included subject prizes for English, mathematics, physical sciences, life sciences and dramatic arts (performance and theory) and the Trophy for Dux 2020.

“It’s safe to say that no one was ready for 2020,” reflected Ruby. “We knew matric would be challenging, but when Covid-19 came along, all of our expectations went out of the window. The class of 2020 had to adapt to a whole new way of doing things. Fortunately for me, I operate well in isolation. I’m quite good at motivating myself and I relish peace and quiet.”

With a love for mathematics and a natural knack for numbers, Ruby always looked forward to math lessons as she was able to zone out and allow her brain to focus on solving the problems. “It was relaxing, in a way, to be able to have a break from the chaos of everything else.”

When she isn’t excelling in the classroom, Ruby enjoys writing and drawing.

“I use a lot of my spare time creating comics and coming up with original characters and worlds for them to interact with. Up until a few months ago, I was set on becoming a scientist, but after lockdown and a lot of inner reflection, I’ve decided to become an animator instead. My biggest dream has always been to run my own animated series.”

Ruby said she “has been at the school for her entire high school career and has watched it change and grow in many ways. “I’m grateful to have been taught by such caring teachers. As someone who enjoys science and maths, as well as having a deep love of the arts, I can say that Waterfall is a place that nurtures a variety of talents.”

The head of student affairs at Waterfall College, Greg Kyle, said, “Ruby has always been a determined student. In class, she was never happy to accept the status quo, but used her keen and inquisitive mind with her positive work ethic to engage with the content. Ruby has a very bright future ahead and we look forward to the plans that unfold for her,”
