PICS, VIDEO: Highway residents unite to clean up after looting spree

New Germany, Pinetown and Clermont are among the areas that have joined in the clean up campaigns to rebuild their towns.

RESIDENTS in New Germany, Clermont and Pinetown have united to clean up their areas following destruction and looting in the province.

The clean-ups, which have been organised in areas which have been affected by the vandalism over the past few days, have gained momentum with residents uniting to restore their areas.

A puzzled New Germany resident, Ndumiso Ndlela said he was still very shaken that people can cause such massive destruction in less than three days.

“I have been residing in this area for the past 25 years and I have never witnessed anything like this. It is just sad.”

Ndlela said New Germany is filled with private businesses and every shop has been vandalised. “ATMs have been bombed, we have no pharmacy, no stores, nothing,” he said.

“One of the oldest shops in the area is empty and I truly feel for the owner who always goes over and beyond to help out in the community, I am just lost for words.

He added that he was grateful to the residents who have united and joined this initiative.

“I also wish to thank a local tavern which organised security and managed to block the roads so the looters could not gain entry,” he added.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
