THE parole terms were that he should not have a run-in with the law until September 2025. This was after his release in 2018 after serving a sentence since 2009 for the murder of the mother of his child.

However, on April 19, 2024, Delani Sibiya was arrested for the murder of his uncle, whom he had violently assaulted with a building brick over a dispute for the ownership of a title deed.

The investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Sthabile Ngidi, said this suspect was arrested for murder and attempted murder, and at the finalisation of the court proceedings recently, he was handed a life sentence for murder as well as 15 years for attempted murder.

“His aunt had tried to intervene and stop him from assaulting his uncle, that is how she was injured. The uncle ended up in a coma in hospital and later passed on,” said Ngidi.

Ngidi added that the court ruled that the accused would first serve his 15 years term before serving the life sentence.

For her investigative work which resulted in the conviction at the court in Pinetown in July, Ngidi is expected to receive a certificate of recognition from the eThekwini SAPS District Commissioner.

The SAPS have also acknowledged the contribution of retired Detective Warrant Officer Sifiso Mbambo, who was the original investigating officer in the matter and spent considerable time working on the case before his retirement.

“His investigative efforts and groundwork in the case contributed towards its eventual finalisation and successful outcome in court.”
