Lily jumps into sport with gusto

St Mary’s DSG, Kloof’s primary school SPAR Star of the Month - July 2021.

ST Mary’s DSG, Kloof’s primary school SPAR Star of the Month is Grade 1 learner, Lily Smith.

Lily recently took part in the KZN biathlon championships and came second overall in her age group. This is an impressive achievement for her as this was the second biathlon Lily has competed in. She has sat on the sidelines supporting her older brother who competed in numerous sporting events and, when he started biathlons this year, Lily watched him take part and decided that she would like to join in. She signed up for her first event and, despite being the youngest in her age category, won it.

Lily was described as quite cautious until now and the sport has helped her truly grow in confidence and her mom said they’ve loved watching Lily go off to the start of each race on her own and sprint round the track smiling like a Cheshire Cat.

She was nervous about the swim as she has only just learnt to swim a full 25m and she is still trying to master a dive but, again, she warmed up with her brother and he gave her a few tips for her dive and then took to the race showing true confidence and determination. She absolutely loves running and being outdoors but most of all she loves the fact she can take part in a sport with her older brother.
