Careways member creates beautiful art piece

Timothy Scullard, who has a natural flair for mosaic art, created a beautiful piece for Careways.

USING his creativity and interest in mosaic art, Careways member, Timothy Scullard created a beautiful art piece with the help of his mother, Jackie.

The 29-year-old started doing mosaic work at Careways, a special needs centre in Kloof.

However, in November 2019 Timothy had a huge health scare which resulted in him spending 21 days in hospital and fewer days at the centre.

Just as he was recovering, the lockdown was implemented in March 2020 which then forced most of those with comorbidities to isolate.

“Timothy, being one of them, had a need to keep busy at home and that is what drove the mosaic craze, which he has a natural flair for,” said his mother.

After being able to buy mosaic kits, his mom designed a country road scene on a metre-long board and Timothy mosaicked it.

“This piece was entered into a competition and made it through to the top 20 art pieces on display, he was so chuffed.

He then started the work on this giant piece for his centre in September 2020. Jackie wanted to capture the various categories the centre focusses on, being education, life skills, outings, craft and cooking skills, but this was no easy task as sourcing the various embellishments to go onto the board would take months.

Labour of love

“In this sourcing process I ordered from Petro Strijdom, who runs Trunell’s Mosaics in Parys, and who became instrumental in helping with many of the pieces on this board and then as a very special favour she created the ladies and gents that adorn the board, the stars of Careways. There was great jubilation when they all noticed they are featured on the board, by name,” said Jackie

The proud mother said Timothy spent hours making this piece.

“Each coloured strip took between six to seven hours to mosaic and being so dedicated to finish it, he would complete a strip in one day, sometimes finishing when it was dark already,” said Jackie.

With grouting not being Timothy’s strong point, mom had to tackle that, but yet again he was right there by her side and helped with the cleaning up process which also took another two days to do.

Careways manager, Tina Smith was in total awe when she saw the completed piece and said, “We received the most amazing surprise from our Timmy.

“He has been working on this for months. We are so proud of our Timmy and his talent,” said Smith.
