House break-ins spike, Hillcrest SAPS urges residents to be vigilant

Police have advised the public not to leave items lying in the property as that attracts criminals.

HILLCREST SAPS urged the Highway community to be more vigilant after a noticeable spike in house and business break-ins.

The station’s communications officer, Capt Linzi Smith urged the community to ensure that no equipment is visible in yards and that security gates need to be kept locked if doors are left open.

“Items left lying in the yard are precipitating factors in allowing perpetrators to come onto properties and take these items including garden furniture. If doors and security gates left open it allows easy access,” she said.

Smith advised residents to try and keep the entrance to their properties, and the surrounding fencing, clear of shrubs and bushes as this would allow for better visibility.

“Having bushes around allows perpetrators to hide and wait for victims,” she said.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
