Help make ‘lekker’ quilts for charity

The quilters aim to make 600 quilts before the 2024 KZN festival, where people will be able to learn to make quilts.

THE KZN Quilters Guild will host a Local Is Lekker Fundraising Quilting Retreat from November 12 to 14 at Skogheim Christian Trust in Izotsha on the South Coast.

The fundraiser will be held ahead of the 2024 Quilting Festival and there will be a massive quilt display, classes to attend and a sewing competition for charity.

A quilt is a multi-layered textile, traditionally composed of three layers of fabric or fibre. These layers traditionally include a woven cloth top, a layer of batting or wadding, and a woven back combined using the techniques of quilting.

Hillcrest resident, Leanne Stewart, who is also the chairlady of the 2024 Quilting Festival, said quilters are generous people and continuously making beautiful quilts for charity. She said that lockdown made it difficult to fundraise as the quilters were unable to meet or host events.

The quilters aim to make 600 quilts before the 2024 KZN festival, where people will be able to learn to make quilts. A few of these quilts will be donated to old age homes and the underprivileged.

In an interview with the Highway Mail, Stewart and another Upper Highway quilter, Sue Cameron revealed they will make Love Quilts for local charities as well as bags that will be filled with much-needed of items.

“These bags will be donated to mastectomy patients at Greys hospital in Pietermaritzburg. They will contain all sorts of items to help the patient through their pain, including a pair of ‘Knitted Knockers’.

“Knitted Knockers are special handmade breast prosthesis for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast. Knitted Knockers are soft, comfortable, beautiful and, when placed in a regular bra, they take the shape and feel of a real breast, said Stewart.

Cameron added that this retreat is open to any keen quilter, even novices, and there are numerous prizes up for grabs, including a Bernina Cutie Frame valued at R17 000. The competition entry is R100 per quilt.

“Some people think quilting is for old people, but it is suitable for everyone, so we are inviting people to try it. Once you have made your first quilt, it sucks you in. Quilting is calming, healing and it is just a wonderful thing to do,” said Cameron

There will also be lucky draw prizes that include two weekend getaways. There are weekend accommodation or day attendee options. Day visitors are welcome to visit the quilt display at R50 per person.
