Matric learner’s rugby talent is world-class
Bryce Calvert, Westville Boys' High School talented rugby player, and 2021 head prefect was chosen for the U18 Top 15 World XV side school team.
DESPITE being chosen as one of the best school rugby players in the world, Westville Boys’ High School’s 2021 head prefect, Bryce Calvert, still remains humble and focussed. Calvert was chosen for the U18 Top 15 World XV side school team.
He has also signed a professional two-year rugby contract with The Sharks.

The former Winston Park Primary School learner said he fell in love with the sport in Grade 3, but it was in Grade 10 that he decided he was going to take it up professionally.
“My father offered me an opportunity to choose any sport and I just picked rugby, he then guided and taught me a lot,” he said.
In Grade 10 he made the KZN U16 side. Last year, he did not get a chance to showcase his talent on the field due to Covid-19 restrictions and lockdown.
“This year, I was honoured to be able to play in the U18 Craven Week Side,” he smiled.
Asked how he managed to focus on his studies while working hard on the rugby field,
Calvert said, “It’s all about having a balanced lifestyle. You always need to get your priorities in order. When I am in the classroom I concentrate on my schoolwork, and when I’m on the field, I give my best,” said Calvert, who plays the hooker position.
Catching up with Calvert just after he finished his last paper, the young champ said it felt exciting that he was done with his exams but admitted that he would miss the school environment.
“I felt at home the very first time I entered these premises,” he said.

He advised other youngsters to always stay disciplined in all aspects of life and to be willing to make sacrifices to reach their goals.
“I have worked hard and this achievement is probably the most humbling experience. I would like to thank each and every person who has supported me in my journey,” he said.
The talented player said he has four mottos that he lives by every day.
One of them is ‘Remaining humble is possible if you have faith and give your glory to God’. Next year, he will study B.COM business management and marketing strategy.
The sportsman also plays water polo for the school’s second team. Westville Boys’ High School’s brand and communications manager, Lyndy Coombe said Calvert has been an incredible ambassador for the school, his province and his country.
“We are so proud of all he has accomplished, despite the disruption to sport in the last two years. We wish him well at The Sharks next year, and look forward to seeing him rise even further in his sporting career,” she said.
