Pinetown couple celebrates a milestone

Pinetown loving couple, Johnny and Geraldene Walker recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

PINETOWN couple, Alistair and Geraldene Walker celebrated their golden anniversary at the weekend.

Alistair, fondly known to everyone as Johnny, emigrated from the United Kingdom (UK) to Salisbury, which is now known as Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. He worked in the prison service for 13 years.

“I was born in Salisbury and we met through a mutual friend,” said Geraldene.

The two tied the knot at the Presbyterian Church on January 22 in 1972.

The Walkers made a decision to move to South Africa in 1982.

Johnny took a job at Distillers in New Germany, where he worked until 2001 and went on an early retirement.

Because of his interest in plants and flowers, he joined a local nursery. He is also an honorary life member of the Highway Orchid Society.

Geraldene worked at a bank, but chose to be a housewife after the couple welcomed their two children, a son and a daughter, into the world.

She mentioned that it was Johnny’s sense of humour that first attracted her to him. She said he still has a wicked sense of humour.

“He is a big tease. He has a typical British humour. I still love that about him. He also played a lot of sports. He mostly bowls for the Pinetown Bowling Club now,” she said.

Johnny said it was Geraldene’s personality that attracted him to her.

When asked about reaching their marriage milestone, Johnny bea

med and said ‘it feels great’.

“We are both easy going and compatible. Couples should support their partner’s interests and be tolerant towards one another,” he said.

Geraldene added that forgiveness is also important in a marriage.

“We also try to do things together. He even helps out in the kitchen,” she quipped.

To mark the milestone, the Walkers had a special lunch.

The loving couple hope to travel abroad later this year to celebrate their anniversary with their son, daughter and two grandchildren, who have since moved to the UK.
