Browns’ School chess project to boost young minds

The infinite chess project is aimed at teaching chess to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to improve their social interaction.

THE Browns’ School has partnered with FIDE Social Commission and KwaZulu-Natal Chess Academy to implement the infinite chess project.

The project is aimed at teaching chess to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to improve their social interaction, communication and cognitive skills.

Speech therapist and chess teacher, Kanthi Sarjoo said 26 learners will participate in this programme at the school.

“Careful monitoring with regard to the participant’s progress will be observed and feedback provided to the researchers on a monthly basis.

“The participants will be equipped with all the necessary skills in order to play the game at a competitive level,” said Sarjoo.

The infinite project was also implemented in France, Belarus, Spain, Norway and Gibraltar.

“This project will provide valuable feedback on how to make the programme available and appropriate for children with ASD worldwide,” added Sarjoo.

The Browns’ School principal, Brenda Hattingh expressed her gratitude to the partners in this project for the wonderful opportunity.
