Westville school shines at lit quiz champs

Westville Senior Primary School were the overall winners of the Kids' Lit Quiz SA.

FOUR young bookworms from Westville Senior Primary School (WSPS) have won this year’s South African Finals of the Kids’ Lit Quiz, in the ‘Olympic Games of Reading’ which was sponsored by Exclusive Books.

The Kids’ Lit Quiz SA Final hosted at Roedean School in Johannesburg on Saturday, saw the eight regional winning teams battle it out for national honours title. These teams included 10 to 13-year-old readers.

The four local readers had won their respective rounds in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Gqeberha and Knysna. A total of 496 pupils from 78 schools had participated.

WSPS took gold leaving The Grove Primary School from Cape Town came in second in the final, with Greenwood Bay College from Plettenberg Bay taking third place

Despite the fact that the quiz was not held in 2020 due to Covid-19 constraints, South African coordinator Marj Brown reports an enthusiastic return of participating school’s this year.

“The learners were extremely excited about the competition and eagerly prepared for it by meeting once a week at break-time for a fun practice quiz, ” said Carryn Maher from WSPS,

The school is known to have been competing in the Kids Lit Quiz for at least 12 years.

“However this was our first win at regional level (Durban) and at national level (Johannesburg).”

With the increasing recognition of the pandemics negative impact on children, and the significance of wellness in schools. Brown emphasises that the quiz has proved that reading has remained an effective pass-time, judging from the great scores.

“There will again be no World Final this year, due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, but Exclusive Books hopes to involve these young winners in local book events, to profile their excellence,” added Brown.

The principal of the winning school, Robert Webber, said that he “is very proud of the children in the school team as they demonstrated exceptional literary knowledge to become the South African Champions of this prestigious international competition. “Challenges and encourages all learners to read widely as reading is the foundation of all learning,” he said.
