Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Captain Bongumusa Manqele said on September 4, 2020, the victim, an e-hailing driver aged 33, received a request to transport two clients from Pinetown to Hillcrest.

According to Manqele one of the accused asked the victim to stop on the M13 as he needed to urinate. The other accused seated at the back pulled out a firearm and instructed the victim to go to the backseat and they drove the vehicle to Pietermaritzburg.

“Police officers from Hilton Flying Squad who were doing their routine duties spotted a suspicious looking vehicle. Upon stopping the vehicle and interviewing the occupants, they discovered that the victim was hijacked in Pinetown.

“The accused were placed under arrest and charged with possession of a hijacked vehicle. The accused were transferred to Pinetown where they appeared in court for carjacking and kidnapping,” he said.

Manqele added that the accused were denied bail and they appeared several times in court until they were finally convicted and sentenced.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
