Their love story began at church. “Peter’s father was the minister, and his mother played organ at the church,” Elaine said with a smile.
On December 1, 1962, Peter’s father married the lovebirds at the Montclair Methodist Church.
“I was born and bred in Durban, and Peter was born in Boksburg and moved with his family to Durban,” said Elaine.
Peter described Elaine as an organiser and his great supporter, while Elaine said Peter is a perfect fit for her and easy-going.
“We were never rich, but we were happy and never questioned our lives,” said Peter who worked at a bank for 35 years.
Being blessed with three children and six grandchildren is what the couple said has been the biggest highlight of their 60 years together. They said the challenge they faced was when Elaine was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“That was a very stressful time. I am glad she recovered,” said Peter.
The physically fit Elaine is in charge of the senior exercise classes in Cowies Hill.
“Couples should just enjoy life – take it one day at a time. Time flies when you are having fun; it does not even feel like we’ve been married for such a long time.
“Most importantly, be content with what you have,” advised the Crabtrees.
Elaine and Peter celebrated their beautiful milestone in October with their loved ones.
“My family will be away on December 1, which is the reason we celebrated early. It was a beautiful, fun gathering – we felt the love, and we are very grateful,” said Elaine.
