Tidy Town Queensburgh calls for local support
The new Tidy Town of Queensburgh has already tackled two clean-ups with the incredible support of the community.

IN an effort to keep the Queensburgh area clear of litter and rubbish, a group of residents has come together to clean up.
Spearheaded by local resident Sheila Jevon and supported by the Soukop Property Group, the Queensburgh Tidy Town initiative was born.
According to Jevon, the idea behind the Tidy Town initiative was simple – a community-driven project to keep the area’s roads and verges clean and free from litter.
At the beginning of August, they held their second clean-up which focused on the M7 Bellville Bridge off-ramp.
Residents helped remove bags of litter either thrown out of car windows or illegally dumped while also tackling overgrown bushes that had encroached on pedestrian walkways and the road.
“We are still in our infancy as a collective, however, in the two clean-ups we’ve already hosted, the community support has been wonderful. I had initially seen the incredible efforts of the Pinetown Tidy Town initiative, and I contacted them, saying I’d be keen to get one going in Queensburgh,” explained Jevon. “For me, Tidy Town is a community-driven project, supported by like-minded volunteers. We felt the M7 would be the perfect place to start because of the amount of rubbish we see in the bushes on the off-ramp. We held our first clean-up in July where we focused on the same off-ramp but on the other side of the bridge.”
Jevon added that she hoped the community supports their initiative.
“I feel the municipality is trying its best to keep things clean, but they can’t cope. They need the community, and we are trying to encourage that with this initiative. We want to instil civic pride and keep our area clean. The one thing we’d really love to see more of would be dustbins. If you look around Queensburgh, there are no dustbins, and that in turn leads to more people littering,” she said.
The next clean-up takes place in September, and anyone interested in volunteering or supporting the initiative is encouraged to follow the Queensburgh Tidy Town Facebook page.
