Queensburgh News named best free Newspaper of the Year

Queensburgh News has taken top honours as best free community newspaper at the AVBOB FCJ Awards.

QUEENSBURGH News has been named Newspaper of the Year (Free) at the AVBOB Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ) Awards which took place in Johannesburg last night.

The award is a celebration of the passion, dedication and hard work that goes into telling the stories of our community in each edition.

“Winning this award means so much to us because of the incredible work that happens behind the scenes to produce Queenburgh News. We don’t have a dedicated journalist, so Shiraz Habbib, Candyce Pillay and Sane Tsinde juggle Queenburgh alongside their demanding workloads at Highway Mail and Northglen News and they never fail to deliver.

“Our designers, too, deserve huge credit for taking that content and bringing it to life. So when I say it’s a team effort, I truly mean it. This award belongs to every person who goes the extra mile to make Queenburgh News what it is,” said group editor for Caxton Durban, Corrinne Louw.

Businesses manager for Caxton Durban, Nicole Berichon, echoed Louw’s excitement.

“I’m absolutely thrilled and incredibly proud of these wins. Being named Newspaper of the Year for Queensburgh News, and seeing Dillon Pillay from Southlands Sun recognised as Best New Upcoming Journalist, is such a special achievement. Our team works incredibly hard, and these awards are a wonderful reflection of their passion, dedication and commitment to our communities. It means so much to us,” she said.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
