WATCH: Takealot deliveries halted in the Upper Highway area as workers protest

Takealot drivers protest in Pinetown over contracts.

TAKEALOT Pinetown branch drivers have taken their complaints to the street in a protest.

Putting their tools down and parking their delivery vehicles, the workers stood with placards on Broadway Street on Friday morning, 23 February in front of the Takealot building to hand over their memorandum of grievances about the updated systems in their contracts that the workers deem as unfair.

“The contract agreement between Takealot (the Employer) and Contractor (the driver) is the document that stipulates the conditions, processes and procedures that must be followed in order for the driver to render services. The contract is also supported by standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the form of eLearning that the drives must follow.

“Over time, these SOPs were updated in order to improve the quality of work conditions for both drivers and Takealot. However since 2023, SOPs were amended to only benefit Pinetown Takealot Management. They introduced driver penalties in the form of monetary deductions from driver earnings, no matter whether the driver, the customer or the restaurant is at fault,” read the memorandum.

The workers grievances are listed in the three page memorandum that is to be handed to the Takealot Pinetown branch awaiting response from the management team by the end of business day today.

In the meantime, deliveries of parcels from Takealot and the Mr Delivery app are not available in the Upper Highway area. The Highway Mail is seeking response from the Takealot management team. This is a developing story.
