Project launches garden at school in KwaXimba

Ndunakazi Primary School set up a food garden to contribute towards the school's feeding scheme.

INTRODUCING the youth to sustainability and environmental care, Urban Harvest launched a garden in Ndunakazi Primary School in KwaXimba. Through the Possibilities Unearthed initiative and partnering with a banking company, learners in the school can now learn from experience by taking care of their garden within the school’s premises.

The shared values of the two organisations converge seamlessly for the cause of food security, making this collaboration not just a garden but a symbol of resilience and community support.

Taking the lead in this project is Rohinee Govender, who is the project head. Speaking about the Ndunakazi Primary School Garden, Govender expressed her enthusiasm for integrating organic gardening into the school curriculum. She emphasised the active involvement of students, aiming to instil in them the significance of healthy nutrition and essential skills.

“What sets this garden apart is not just its lush appearance but the ingenious resourcefulness displayed in the face of a water crisis. We have turned adversity into an opportunity, crafting a garden that not only survives but significantly contributes to the school’s kitchen. Through astute water management and innovative irrigation methods, a plethora of medicinal plants, perennial herbs and fruit trees now thrive, with 90% of the yield directly benefiting the school’s kitchen. Our vision extends beyond feeding the community as the surplus produce finds its way to a local farmer’s market, generating funds crucial for maintaining the garden’s upkeep,” she said.

“Sometimes, a thank you is short and small, but it comes from the heart. The hearts of the entire community were touched, and today, we thank Rohinee, who decided to bring this gift to us.”
