Wearing green to create awareness on Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day

On Monday, the KwaZulu-Natal Cerebral Palsy celebrated the members under their care and brought more awareness about the condition by teaching the community about cerebral palsy.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Cerebral Palsy (KZNCP) was painted in green as learners and members of the organisation were dressed in green as they observed Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day on March 25.

KZNCP is based in Pinetown and was founded in 1969 to provide support services and care to the cerebral palsy community. The purpose of the association is to cater for the needs of those living with cerebral palsy and to create awareness in communities and society about the disability and the people who live with it.

Linda Naik of the organisation said the day is a time to bring awareness to cerebral palsy (CP) and also a time to support and celebrate those living with CP. One of the main goals is to help people learn more about the condition and the people who live with it.

“Cerebral palsy is a common but still often misunderstood condition. Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month is so important for spreading the word about the people who live with it. It also gives a chance for the community to get involved to help make a difference,” she said.

To celebrate the day, the community of KZNCP wore green, put up their banners and spent the day teaching about cerebral palsy.

“Our plan to go to the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Westville campus to spend the day teaching there fell away due to unforeseen circumstances, but we were happy to celebrate and teach within our community,” she said.
