Exhilarating racing at season opener

The members of KZNRRC did not disappoint on the Dezzi Raceway, and the visiting drivers in the Lotus Challenge Series from Gauteng entertained the crowds.

THE Sports and GT car classes got the fans’ adrenaline pumping at the KwaZulu-Natal Road Racing Club’s (KZNRRC) first race of the season on Saturday (March 3).

With a fabulous turnout of spectators filling the grandstands and banks of Dezzi Raceway, the members of KZNRRC did not disappoint, keeping their feet flat in corners and showing they are all up for the challenge this year to race for podiums and earn championship points.

During the first event, pole position was taken by Steve Clark in his red Chevron BMW with Rob Prece second in his manufacturer’s Challenge VW Golf. Unfortunately, for both entrants, they failed to finish the race, leaving Jonathan Edwards in his single-seater race car to take line honours after starting from third on the grid.

The start of two-wheel action also did not disappoint, with the exciting Motard class first to rev up at the starting grid. Kyle Robertson took pole position with Adrian Jansen Ter Laeck sharing the front row in second. Robertson took the chequered flag just 2.092 seconds ahead of Aston Nesbitt who raced spectacularly, starting plum last.

In the M Projects historic event, Daryl Mann in his Datsun led both heats from start to finish with Reg Sutton in his Mk1 Ford Escort finishing second. The visiting drivers in the Lotus Challenge Series from Gauteng further entertained the crowds with local drivers, Barry Dunford and Andrew Fulton, racing among the drivers of this challenge.

It was encouraging to see new faces and machinery at the first meeting of the year for KZNRRC, and the drivers and riders delivered good, close racing in all the classes. The next KZNRRC round will be on April 6 at the Dezzi Raceway.
