Hillcrest High School teaches Hillcrest Primary School Sign Language
Grade 5 learners at Hillcrest Primary had a lesson of sign language by the Hillcrest High School Sign Language Club.
AS part of Deaf Awareness Month in September, the Hillcrest High School Sign Language Club visited Hillcrest Primary School (HPS) to teach some of the Grade Five learners some South African Sign Language basics.
#DeafAwarenessMonth takes place in September and aims to increase awareness and inclusion of the official South African Sign Language (SASL) and improve the lives of deaf community members.

The Club, an initiative of Hillcrest High School (HPS) educator Joanne Silva, set out to pass on their Sign Language skills to the HPS learners before attending the Fulton School for the Deaf annual school play.
The HHS Sign Language Club is actively involved in sharing their skills with others. Club members recently visited a local shopping centre where the staff member who works at the pancake stand, Mathembi Mbanjwa, is deaf. The group of learners spent the morning working with Mbanjwa, making pancakes and chatting with her in Sign Language as well as teaching patrons how to order their pancakes and say please and thank you in Sign Language.
