Avid blood donor celebrates his 425th donation

Gary Kemp committed to donating blood every two weeks 21 years ago, bringing him to his 425th donation recently.

THE South African National Blood Service celebrated Gary Kemp for donating for the 425th time. Being on the receiving end of blood donation for his daughter 21 years ago, Kemp said he was inspired to commit himself to donating blood every two weeks.

“When my daughter was diagnosed with cancer and needed platelets, it was a difficult time for us, and I realised then the importance of donating blood. If it wasn’t for the blood donation, my daughter would not have been saved,” he said.

Demonstrating his commitment, Kemp said he sets out his schedule accordingly so he can come to the SANBS offices and do the process of donation.
“I have had no complications, and my body is taking it well as I am still here, giving for the 425th time. My family is in full support of my commitment, and they were here to celebrate with me when I celebrated the 400th time,” he said.

Kemp encouraged the public to join him in saving lives. “Platelets are important donations that save lives as they are scarce, and if people could show up in their numbers – it could save many lives, especially children’s lives,” he said.

To celebrate this milestone, Kemp was honoured at the Westwood Donor Centre where he received a hamper as a token of appreciation for his commitment.

Sister Lalitha at the centre said the organisation is grateful for Kemp’s patriotism and encourages community members to follow his lead.

The SANBS donor centre in Westwood welcomes donors from Monday to Friday during office hours.
