Aweh! Find out what’s happening in Durban

Another week of fun is upon us in Durban. Find out what you could be getting up to this weekend and beyond.

THERE is so much fun to be experienced in Durban, from music and dance shows to a stress-reliever comedy show. Here is a directory of activities for this week in your city.

COMEDY

90-Day Comedian

South African Comedian Dalin Oliver is heading to DropKick Murphy’s in Durban with his international award-winning stand-up comedy show, 90-Day Comedian.

The Fringe World Festival Best Weekly Comedy Show winner is fresh from a six-country and 14-city tour of the United Kingdom and Europe after wrapping up a five-city tour of Australia where he delivered gags tight enough to get past border control in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Oliver’s debut tour to England, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Spain and France left audiences in stitches and begging for more as he got hitched to their comedy scene before his work visa and jokes expired.

The show is to take place at Dropkick Murphy’s, 219 Florida Rd, Windermere, on Saturday, October 12, at 19:30.

Tickets are R150 at Webtickets.

Barry Hilton in Rhumbelow Theatres

Barry has an uncanny knack for finding the humour in everyday situations which everyone can relate to and laugh about. With humour that is never rude or crude, he leaves his audience in stitches and always wanting more.

SHOWS

An afternoon with the Durban City Orchestra

The Durban City Orchestra will be performing at two concerts.

Music lovers are invited to an intimate afternoon concert in the company of the Durban City Orchestra (DCO) as they perform a magnificent spring-inspired programme of Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart and more, at two different concerts: St Thomas Church, Musgrave, on Sunday, October 13, at 15:00 and Northlands Bowling Club on Sunday, October 20, at 15:00.

The orchestra, one of the longest-running orchestras in the country, has a complement of approximately 30 active members who get together weekly. The orchestra includes two accomplished professional musicians in Charl van der Merwe as resident conductor and Jitske Brien as concertmaster, joined by guest artists.

It is a carefully curated programme of ever-popular classics:

– Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana – a captivating instrumental piece from Pietro Mascagni’s one-act opera, Cavalleria Rusticana.
– Carmen Suite No 1 by Georges Bizet – a brilliant orchestral arrangement that distils the essence of his renowned opera.
– Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony Finale – which stands as one of the most iconic and transformative moments in classical music.
– Symphony No 12 by Mozart – an early work that showcases the young composer’s burgeoning talent.
– Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No 88 – a splendid example of the mature classical style for which he is renowned.
– O Mio Babbino Caro – a poignant aria from Giacomo Puccini’s 1918 opera, Gianni Schicchi.

For both concerts, it is advisable to pre-book tickets, however, unsold tickets are available at the door.
Tickets are R180 and R150 for pensioners and students.
Bookings can be made through Quicket.
