Conservancy hosts environmental talk

The money raised on the evening will go towards the Mend-the-Molweni Project, a project focused on fixing the ongoing sewage spillages in Hillcrest which eventually find their way into the Molweni River.

KLOOF Conservancy is hosting an environmental talk on November 27. This is a fundraiser for the Mend-the-Molweni Project. The talk will be about Secretarybirds.

It will be held at the Kloof Scout Hall, 14 Buckingham Road, Kloof, at 18:00. Entry is R40 for Kloof Conservancy members and R50 for non-members.

Giving a short description about the bird, conservancy chairman Paolo Candotti said the Secretarybird is a peculiar character that roams across sub-Saharan Africa.

“It is the only member of its family, Sagittariidae, which is found nowhere else on Earth. These long-legged raptors are world renowned for their ability to expertly dispatch their prey with precise and powerful kicks – prey that notably includes venomous snakes.

“Such is the admiration for this remarkable species that it is proudly displayed on the South African coat of arms as a symbol of protection.”

Speaker Cassie Carstens, BirdLife South Africa’s Secretarybird conservation officer, will share about her journey across the country following these iconic African birds and learning what conservation and research work are required to ensure their survival.

The Mend the Molweni Project is a joint venture between the Hillcrest, Everton and Kloof Conservancies and is focused on fixing the ongoing sewage spillages in Hillcrest which eventually find their way into the Molweni River.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
