Players have a ball at tournament

Players show off their talent at the Friendship Over-50 Football Tournament.

FOOTBALL clubs from Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal showed off their skills at the Friendship Over-50 Football Tournament held recently.

Escombe Football Club (EFC), the host and one of the featured teams in the tournament, also gave a good account of their Over-50 team with some impressive performances.

Malvern resident and EFC member, Selven Naidu, was one of the organisers and said the two-day football tournament was well supported by both locals and visitors.

“This is an annual tournament that was started in 2021, giving KZN and Gauteng teams a chance to compete against each other. It was started by Vasie Naidoo, Kugen Moodley and Villa Chummie. The idea was to have a tournament that helped build friendships and camaraderie as well as fostering respect and sportsmanship which formed the pillars of the tournament.

“Overall the tournament was extremely successful. This was the first time Escombe hosted the tournament and I was impressed by the support shown by everyone. There are a number of ex-professional players competing here and you could see the passion and hunger on display by everyone competing. While a big part of the Over-50s team is about promoting the junior football club, we also hope to grow our team to give guys an outlet to still play competitive football,” he said.
