No flooding reported in Highway area after deadly Durban rains

Councillors confirm no major flooding in the Highway area, while five lives were claimed in Durban South, Lamontville.

NO floods have been reported in the Highway area following the discovery of five bodies, including children, who were washed away after a freak flood in the south of Durban.

The victims were swept away during heavy rains that caused widespread destruction, collapsing houses and roads in both the southern parts of Durban and the Ugu District.

Councillors in the Highway area confirmed that no major damage had been recorded, aside from fallen trees, blocked stormwater drains, and minor power outages.

Ward 10 councillor, Caelee Laing, said she had been assessing the situation in her area.

“There has been no major damage except for fallen trees, and we are receiving assistance from Community Policing Forum (CPF) members who are actively clearing the roads. We also had a few blocked drains due to the heavy water flow and some electricity outages, which have since been resolved,” she said.

Ward 18 councillor, Melanie Brauteseth, said conditions in her area remained calm, with only a few fallen trees reported. Ward 16 councillor, Nomfundo Khubone, noted that some electricity outages had occurred, primarily due to load-shedding-related trips.
