Ratepayers applaud CSW for clearing Westville Recycling Centre

The Westville Environmental Trust has been cleared with the help of CSW after battling with illegal dumping.

THE Westville Ratepayers’ Association and eThekwini Ratepayers’ Movement have commended Cleansing and Solid Waste (CSW) for stepping in to clear the Westville Recycling Centre Trust depot at the Westville Civic Centre.

Recently, the Highway Mail highlighted growing concerns over illegal dumping at the centre, which had become an eyesore due to the influx of non-recyclable waste. At the time, the centre had considered legal action against offenders. Chris Owen, a representative from the centre, urged residents to bring only recyclables or face consequences for illegal dumping.

Just weeks later, CSW intervened, clearing the depot and restoring order. While the ratepayers’ associations welcomed the clean-up, they urged residents to take responsibility and refrain from illegal dumping.
“In an effort to assist both our community and the city, we want to remind residents that household waste dumping at this depot must stop. Recyclables have been contaminated as a result,” they stated.

To enforce compliance, security guards at the facility have been instructed to deny access to anyone attempting to dispose of unsuitable waste.
“Garden and household waste should be placed on your verge for collection on scheduled route days. Residents disposing of waste at the civic centre or other public areas not designated for this purpose must take responsibility and abide by waste disposal regulations,” the statement continued.

With CSW’s intervention and increased awareness, the ratepayers’ associations hope to see long-term improvements in waste management and environmental care in Westville.
