Highway veteran educator retires after 43 years
Cathy Booyens moves to a new chapter after sharing 43 years of her life with learners as an educator.

AFTER 43 years of inspiring and educating learners, local teacher Cathy Booyens is retiring, making her final stop at Hillcrest Collegiate. Her teaching career, spanning multiple schools in the Highway area, has left a lasting impact on countless learners.

Booyens began her journey at Port Natal High before serving as Head of Afrikaans at Westville Girls’ High School and later as HOD (Afrikaans) at Thomas More College. Her dedication to education has shaped young minds for more than four decades.
Hillcrest Collegiate executive head, Janice Breetzke, described Booyens as a passionate educator whose enthusiasm and creativity made a lasting impression in the classroom.
“Her journey has seen the evolution of education, but her unwavering dedication to students remained constant. Beyond textbooks, she imparted valuable life lessons that shaped generations. Whether through engaging lessons, creative projects, or simply being a trusted mentor, she fostered a sense of community and respect among students and colleagues,” said Breetzke.
As Booyens steps into retirement, she hopes to leave behind a legacy of learning that continues to influence Hillcrest Collegiate and the many school communities she has served.

“As I retire, I plan to pursue creative activities that I never had time for. My motto is: Never stagnate! Never be complacent! Keep striving, try something new, life needs excitement!” she said.
Breetzke emphasised that although Booyens is leaving the classroom, her impact will continue to inspire future generations.
“On behalf of the entire education community, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Cathy on her well-deserved retirement. We thank her for her years of service, dedication, and the lasting difference she has made in the lives of students, families, and colleagues alike,” she said.
