eThekwini warns of water supply interruption amid planned shutdown

Water supply to parts of eThekwini will be interrupted from Tuesday at 04:00 until Wednesday 04:00, with water tankers to be deployed to affected areas. eThekwini says recovery from the shutdown could take up to two weeks.

RESIDENTS of eThekwini are being warned of a planned shutdown of the water supply from various reservoirs supplied by the uMngeni-uThukela Wiggins Water Treatment Works gravity system, from Tuesday morning, April 8, until Wednesday, April 9.

According to eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, the shutdown is necessary for the City’s bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW), to replace 1200mm diameter sales and check meters on the gravity bulk pipeline.

ā€œIn preparation for the shutdown, UUW will commence by draining out the reservoir networks and open the scour once all reservoirs have reached a low level. During the shutdown period, there will be no water flowing into the City’s reservoirs. In addition, the outlets of the city reservoirs will also be closed during the shutdown period. This is to reduce reservoirs’ recovery time,ā€ said Sisilana.

Areas that will be affected by the shutdown include Beachwood, Glenwood, Bulwer, parts of Morningside, Stamford Hill, parts of Overport, parts of Essenwood, parts of Berea, parts of Westridge, Congella, Seaview, Umbilo, parts of Carrington Heights, Durban CBD, Durban beachfront, Esplanade, Point, South Beach, Amanzimtoti CBD, Athlone Park and Kingsway Hospital, Almond, Winklespruit, and Warner Beach.

“We urge all residents to reduce water consumption and use water sparingly during this shutdown period,” Sisilana said. “This is a crucial step to ensure that the recovery process is efficient and swift.”

The recovery process for the City’s reservoirs could take up to two weeks after the completion of the shutdown, with some reservoirs recovering sooner than others.

“Our teams will be closely monitoring the system to ensure the full restoration of water supply,” Sisilana added. “We are committed to minimising the inconvenience to our residents and will deploy water tankers to affected areas where necessary. The Municipality apologises for any inconvenience caused.”

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and adhere to the guidelines provided by the municipality to ensure a smooth recovery process.
