International Dance Day gets people moving

It does not matter which style you favour or if you have rhythm, the aim is to get dancing and moving on International Dance Day.

WHETHER you only dance for fun, in a group at social gatherings or professionally on stage, today is your day to shine and let loose.

Celebrated annually on April 29, International Dance Day encourages everyone to put their foot forward and dance like nobody is watching or as if the spotlight is on, just for you. Dating back to 1982 when the Dance Committee of ITI founded the day to honour the birthday of modern ballet creator, Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), April 29 will never be the same.

From classic ballroom, tap, street, or traditional dancing we all have our style and South African Kingdom Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise (Krump) dancer and academy owner Senzosenkosi Verb Bhengu is no different. While dancing on national and international stages, Bhengu does not limit himself to krump and also performs hip-hop. “I am a dancer, so whatever style is thrown at me I try my best to execute it,” said Bhengu.

The New Germany resident said he was inspired to the movement by watching Jika Majika and dance movies like You Got Served and Stomp da Yard. “I don’t just do competitions but I also teach. I’ve been involved in international competitions such as Red Bull Dance Your Style and EBS world krump championship. Locally, I’ve competed and won several competitions,” said Bhengu. “Dancers are doing great things, but if there was more support in media and private companies, they would be able to do more for the community overall.”

To encourage others to join the sport and art form of dancing, for International Dance Day you can take a dance class or host a dance party for you and your friends. Use this day as an opportunity to learn a new dance style, whether it’s ballet, salsa, hip-hop, or traditional folk dance. Happy International Dance Day.
