Powerlifters eye world champs
Taneal Mitchell and Robyn Geldart prepare for their national competition in power lifting taking place in America.
TWO Hillcrest-based powerlifters, Taneal Mitchell (47) and Robyn Geldart (55), have their sights set on representing South Africa at the AWPC World Powerlifting Championships in Idaho Falls, USA, this August. With national titles and world records already under their belts, the pair is now training intensely for the opportunity to lift on the global stage.

Mitchell, who is coached by Tarynne Cass at The Natural Way gym, only began her powerlifting journey in early 2024. Her rapid ascent in the sport has been nothing short of remarkable. At her first amateur competition, Clash of the Titans in April, she dominated her age and weight category by setting four new national records across squats, bench press, and deadlifts.
Later that year, at the AWPC National Championships, Mitchell broke her own national records and clinched a world record for squats with a 137.5kg lift. She also achieved a 55kg bench press and a 135kg deadlift, bringing her total to 327.5kg.
“This sport has given me purpose, discipline, and something to fight for. To now represent South Africa internationally is a dream I never imagined would come true at this age,” said Mitchell.
Geldart, her training partner and fellow Hillcrest athlete, mirrors that journey. At 55, she holds national records and a world record in her own age and weight category. Both women have become powerful symbols of what’s possible with dedication, regardless of age.

While the passion and performance are already there, the path to the World Championships comes with significant expenses — including entry fees, travel, kit, and accommodation. They are seeking community and corporate support to help bridge the gap and make the trip to Idaho a reality.
Before the World Champs, Mitchell must first qualify by competing again in the Clash of the Titans before August, followed by Nationals. Besides representing South Africa, her goal is to break her own world squat record and claim the world deadlift record in her division.
