Celebrating unity and wellness on International Day of Yoga
June 21 was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, sparking a global movement that has gripped both the young and old throughout the world. Today, eThekwini celebrates the 11th edition of International Day of Yoga with a gathering of over 3000 people who will be moving in harmony as they practise yoga at the Amphitheatre in North Beach.
YOGIS and novices all over the world are united today in celebration of the 11th International Day of Yoga, better known as Yoga Day.
In 2014, June 21 was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as the day to celebrate the ancient practice of yoga. Yoga integrates physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation (dhyana) to enhance health, mental clarity, and spiritual awareness. At over 5000 years old, yoga is recognised for its ability to reduce stress, improve flexibility, and promote mindfulness while addressing modern health challenges. In eThekwini, like in many other cities, people gather in the early hours of the morning, on June 21, in celebration of this day.
As in previous years, the gathering is hosted by the Sivananda World Peace Foundation at the Amphitheatre in North Beach. Ishwar Ramlutchman, president of the Sivananda World Peace Foundation and chief organiser of the event, said: “Durban’s vibrant multicultural atmosphere, its cacophony of sound and colour from its bustling markets to golden beaches, provides a unique setting for this celebration. The serenity of yoga blends seamlessly with our diverse cultures, symbolising unity and wellness.”
