Mother of murdered woman wants swift justice in court

Sibongile Shezi says she is tired of the back and forth for Sikhumbuzo Zungu's court appearances, who she hopes could speedily be convicted and sentenced.

BABONGILE Nkonyeni’s mother, Sibongile Shezi, has said she is “tired” of seeing the face of Sikhumbuzo Zungu, who on Thursday (June 9) appeared in the Pinetown Regional Court for the alleged murder of her daughter, who is the mother of his child.

Zungu is due back in court on August 21 for a pre-trial conference, and after the proceedings on Thursday, Shezi said she hoped the matter could speedily reach the conclusion of seeing the accused convicted and sentenced.

“I don’t want to keep having to come to court because it will not bring my child back to life. It would be better if he was convicted and sentenced because I am tired of seeing his face,” said Shezi.

Shezi, who lives in Umzinto, also lamented the financial toll of travelling back and forth for Zungu’s court appearances.

The matter has experienced several delays at the Pinetown Regional Court, some due to Zungu having to secure legal representation.

Nkonyeni’s family has previously expressed frustration over the delays and said they hoped that the trial would commence soon.

It is alleged that Zungu murdered Nkonyeni on Sunday, October 26, at about 03:00 at a residence in Pinetown. Zungu was arrested two days later.

Zungu faces an additional charge of theft because at the time of his arrest, he was allegedly found in possession of two cellphones belonging to Nkonyeni.

Late last year, Zungu was denied bail by the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.
