ROBYN Charnley expressed her satisfaction with the sentence handed down on Monday (August 3) to Anthony Edward Ball (71) who was convicted for the 2022 Kloof road rage murder of her husband Dean.

Charnley, who emotionally embraced family members and friends in the Pinetown Regional Court gallery after Ball was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment, said the jail term, though it would not “bring back my husband”, is “good enough”.

“I am very happy with the sentence. I didn’t expect it to be so much but I’m really happy with the 12,” said Charnley, who, commenting on the defence’s intention to appeal the sentence said, “they can try”.  

Charnley also said she had no issues with the trial proceedings.

After sentencing, Ball’s defence told Magistrate Muntu Khumalo that their client had instructed them to bring applications to appeal the sentence, for bail pending the application for leave to appeal, and for a review of the proceedings.

Khumalo told the defence that a date has to be arranged for these applications.

“But it cannot be today because I have a full roll,” said the magistrate, who, in his sentencing, declared that Ball is unfit to possess a firearm.

In previous proceedings, Khumalo refused the defence’s request to have the proceedings reviewed before sentencing.

Ball, who had pleaded not guilty, was convicted on a charge of murder on March 19, 2025 for fatally gunning down Dean in 2022 during a road rage incident in Kloof.

The sentence proceedings had suffered several delays, some of which were a result of Ball’s hospitalisation.
