AS part of the Annual Founders’ Day celebrations that happen each year at Hillcrest High School, retired and previous educators and staff were invited to attend a special assembly and the unveiling of the 50^th Jubilee commemorative plaque recently.

During the assembly, with learners from grades 8-12 assembled, the current Head Leaders, Azola Shandu and Natalie Rees, dedicated a reading to the school, and led the learners in a prayer of thanks.

Following a welcome address by principal Denise Knight, former principal Craig Girvin stepped up to the podium to share the history of the school, from its conception and foundation in 1976 to present day, with many highlights along the way.

“Mr Girvin joined Hillcrest High School as a geography teacher in 1985. He was appointed as a deputy principal in 1993, acting principal in 1999 and principal in May 2002,” said Knight.

“He was the ideal choice to take our learners, staff and guests on the journey down memory lane, having spent his entire teaching career at HHS before retiring in 2022.”

Girvin spoke of several significant events in the school history and of the principals who held the position before him, including Gerald Delport who served from 1997 to 1999 and was one of the guests on the day.

He also shared how, in 1991, the parent body had voted unanimously to welcome black learners to the school, and that the first five learners had started and settled in well, without incident.

He also recalled Sibongiseni Ndebele, one of the current deputy principals, being amongst the first black staff employed in the administration of the school.

In her speech prior to the unveiling of the 50th Plaque, which is positioned at the entrance to the school, Knight said, “Today we gather to mark a significant milestone in the life of our school as we celebrate 50 years of educational excellence, community, and tradition. This plaque serves as a permanent reminder of the countless individuals whose vision, dedication, and hard work have shaped this school over the past five decades.”

Knight honoured the founders, the principals, teachers, support staff, parents and learners who have all left their mark on the school, contributing to its diverse history.

“Our 50^th plaque represents not only where we have come from, but also who we are. It speaks of values that have endured through the years: commitment, perseverance, integrity, and a passion for nurturing young people,” she said. “As we stand on the foundation laid by those who came before us, we recommit ourselves to preparing future generations to lead, serve, and make a positive difference in our world.”

Before inviting deputy principal Carol-Lee Edy, who has served the school for almost 39 years, to unveil the plaque, Knight closed off by saying, “May this plaque serve as a lasting reminder of our rich heritage and as an inspiration for all who pass by it in the years to come.”
