Life Entabeni Hospital is advancing patient care with modern upgrades and cutting-edge technology

Life Entabeni Hospital, in Durban’s Berea, has a rich 90-year history with the local community and medical professionals and is undergoing phased building enhancements to further improve its patient care.

SPEAKING to the Berea Mail, Atish Maharaj, Hospital Manager, explains that in September 2023, the Finlayson Surgical Ward 2 underwent a significant transformation and was rebuilt to ensure a modern, improved patient centred environment.

“After months of meticulous planning and construction, we reopened our Surgical Ward 2 in May 2024, with an improved experience for patients and our healthcare teams,” said Maharaj.

Focus then shifted to Finlayson Surgical Ward 1 and construction commenced in November 2024. The anticipated date for completion is September 2025 and this renovation will further improve the hospital’s ability to deliver outstanding surgical care in a refreshed, modern setting.

Life Entabeni Hospital is also introducing the Da Vinci X Robotic System to its surgical theatre.

“This revolutionary technology is set to transform the way surgeries are performed, improving precision and enhancing patient recovery. The system translates a surgeon’s hand movements in real time, ensuring unmatched accuracy. Its robotic-assisted instruments bend and rotate beyond human capability, enabling intricate procedures through tiny incisions. High-definition, 3D magnified imaging provides unparalleled clarity, allowing for meticulous surgical execution,” said Maharaj.

To ensure a seamless transition, the hospital’s surgeons will undergo rigorous training on the Da Vinci simulator, refining their skills ahead of the system’s installation. By June, Life Entabeni Hospital will take a significant step into the future of surgical care, refining outcomes and patient safety through modern technology.

“Life Entabeni Hospital continuously strives to innovate and improve, ensuring our patients receive the highest standard of care. With the renovation of our surgical wards and the introduction of the Da Vinci X Robotic System, our hospital is shaping the future of healthcare—one advancement at a time,” concluded Maharaj.
