Celebrating Women in Business this Women’s Month at The Pavilion Shopping Centre
Traditionally in South Africa in August the spotlight falls on the role of courageous, strong women in society as we honour and remember the 1956 march of approximately 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, to petition against the country's pass laws.
Now, nearly seven decades later, August remains a month to champion inspirational women and to provide platforms to hear their stories of resilience, perseverance and fortitude and give guidance to the young women who follow in the footsteps of the many remarkable women who have paved the way for the generations who follow.
Over the next few weeks, The Highway Mail in partnership with the Pavilion Shopping Centre, will look at women in business, to be inspired by their successes, and learn from their challenges.
The month will culminate with two performances of an hour-long women’s month concert by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of resident conductor, Chad Hendricks, with special guests, to be held at The Pav Fountain Court on Sunday 31 August, at 11am and 1pm. Entry is free and all are welcome.
HAWA Deedat, owner of Bon Appetit Pet & Vet, a speciality store at The Pavilion Shopping Centre, is marking 30 years in business, and she’s using her milestone to encourage other women to support one another in entrepreneurship.

Deedat, who describes herself as a people’s person with a passion for retail, said she’s always had a natural flair for business. “Fortunately, I’m a real people’s person, so it’s a natural fit,” she said. Reflecting on her journey, Deedat said that while she’s been fortunate to receive steady support throughout her career, that doesn’t mean it has all been smooth sailing. “Every business has its challenges, but with a positive attitude, you learn that they can be overcome,” she said.
On the importance of women supporting each other in business, Deedat was clear: “It’s imperative. The pie is big enough for all of us, and we must never miss an opportunity to encourage other women to take the leap into business.”
Looking back, she said she would tell her younger self to be braver and to banish self-doubt. “You’ve got this,” she added with a smile. If she could change anything, Deedat said she would have expanded her business earlier. She describes her proudest moment at Pavilion Shopping Centre as holding her own against big-name retailers. “Taking on the corporates was a major milestone. It’s a real achievement for an independent business to go up against the bigger players, but we’re still here. For us, it’s personal. We offer a level of service and expertise that corporates can’t always provide.” Her message to women looking to start their own businesses? “The sky’s the limit, ladies. If you have an idea you believe in, faith in yourself, and the willingness to work hard, then go for it.”
