Craft beer festival raises funds for charity

The fifth edition of the Ales for Tails fundraiser was proclaimed a success by organiser and craft brewer, Warren Eades.

ALES for Tails, the craft beer festival, was held on the Kloof and Highway SPCA grounds in August and attracted the greatest number of craft beer fans yet.

Ales for Tails organiser Warren Eades said that the fifth Ales for Tails event offered the public 45 different beers to taste, served by the home brewers themselves. Live music entertained the crowd, and food stalls were on offer. The musicians donated their time and did not charge for their performances, in the spirit of raising as much as possible for the good cause.

“All funds coming from the home brewers go directly to the SPCA,” said the organiser. “Ales for Tails is all about giving the home brewers the opportunity to talk to people about their beers. We sell half beers as we try to encourage people to taste a selection on the day. I usually give the home brewers three months’ notice. It takes three weeks to brew a batch of beer, and each brewer donates about 2.5 litres for the event,” says Eades.

The support from the local business community for the fundraising festival was generous.

“Sponsors donated generously to cover the costs of the event which could not take place without their support; everyone is so supportive of this initiative. And then this amazing crowd pulled in,” says Eades.

Kloof and Highway SPCA volunteers, Beryl Ferguson, Lynette Suter, Jen Owen and Jade Clark, welcome guests to the craft beer festival.

Eades, a passionate home brewer, craft brewery owner, and marketing professional, originated the concept in 2016. He says he came up with the idea when he was a dog walker at the Kloof organisation.

“It was my idea as I was a home brewer and a dog walker with the SPCA. I would come every Tuesday and Thursday to walk the rescue dogs, and I would think what an ideal venue for an event,“ Eades said.

Brigitte Ferguson explained that the craft beer festival is one of the largest fundraisers for the Kloof and Highway SPCA, and the organisation was thrilled with the turnout for the event. Funds raised by the craft beer festival will be used by the Kloof and Highway SPCA in their ongoing fight for the prevention of cruelty to animals.
