WATCH: Taxi driver defying Metro police officer charged

A taxi driver has been charged with attempted murder of a Metro police officer.

A TAXI driver appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate’s court on the charge of attempted murder after he allegedly attempted to knock over a Metro police officer.

A video of the incident was widely shared on social media. In the video, the Metro police officer is seen writing a fine in front of the taxi and the taxi driver driving off in an attempt to knock over the officer.

The KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala, said a case was opened at Hillcrest SAPS. “The victim alleged that on 3 October 2022 at 10:20, he was performing his duty as Metro police officer on Old Main Road in Hillcrest when he stopped a 29-year-old taxi driver who was causing major disruption and inconvenience to other road users. While issuing the fine, the suspect attempted to knock the officer.”

Gwala said the suspect fled the scene but was later arrested and detained at Hillcrest SAPS for attempted murder.
