Pinetown truck stop hosts wellness campaign for drivers
To celebrate National Transport Month, Metro Truck Stop focused on truck drivers’ wellness in a campaign that offered basic health checks.
A TRUCK stop located in Westmead supported National Transport Month with a truck-driver wellness campaign on October 10 and 11.
Metro Truck Stop invited truck drivers to have their blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol measured, and a weight assessment undertaken at their Westmead premises.
The retailer at Metro Truck Stop, Prashna Ramsunder, said, “A safe and effective transport system contributes positively to both the economic and social stability of our country. Goods and passenger transport are the lifeblood of our economy.”
Ramsunder said that due to truck drivers being constantly on the road, trying to meet urgent deadlines, and attempting to travel during off-peak periods, they often can’t prioritise sufficient rest or self-care. To focus on the drivers’ well-being during National Transport Month, the truckstop chose to partner with Shell and the Road Freight Council to allow drivers to ‘get the basics checked’.

Ramsunder said, “Drivers help move our economy, they deliver medicine to doctors, and fill shelves with products. The campaign is a starting point to becoming healthy – when drivers are well, they can do their jobs properly.”
The Metro Truck Stop offers hot showers, ablutions, meals, rest in a secure environment, an outdoor gym, and an on-site Wellness Centre which is open daily between 16:00 and 22:00. The retailer says that drivers can arrange to collect their chronic medication at the Wellness Centre, and the business has an affiliation with a hospital in case of medical emergencies.
Ramsunder says her family’s connection to transport started with her father’s bus company in rural areas.
“We try to offer a one-stop solution to cover truck drivers’ needs. This is a family business – I was born into transport. Fuel runs in my veins, and I want to keep our family legacy alive.”
A truck wash is due to be constructed later this year to add to the services offered on the premises.
