Tributes pour in for Highway athlete
Grant Cummings’ memorial service will be held at the City Hill Church in Hillcrest on Saturday, February 18.
THE HIGHWAY community activist and prominent athlete, Grant Cummings, will be remembered at a memorial service that will be held in his honour tomorrow. Grant Cummings tragically passed away after he was reported to have fallen off the edge of a waterfall in Giba Gorge on Monday.
Cummings is well known for his contribution to the community through his love for athletics. He is the founder of the Grant Cummings Trail Snakes, which was established about eight years ago, to introduce trail running to groups. The 51-year-old lawyer was also a member of the Westville athletics club as well as the Shongweni Parkrun.

Tributes from the Highway community have been pouring in for the athlete since the news of his passing broke. The Westville Athletic Club paid tribute to the Kloof resident in a Facebook post detailing his achievements.
“He completed 10 Comrades, eight of them in Westville colours, and earned himself seven Bill Rowans and two Silver medals. Over his years of Comrades running, Grant raised over R1m for Comrades Charities. Specifically, many will recall the duel between himself and Dean Wight in 2018 – both raised in excess of R300k that year,” read the post.
Shongweni Parkrun passed their condolences, remembering him as a friendly and helpful member of their event.
“He completed 223 parkruns in total, of which 180 of these were at Shongweni, often finishing first, and his best time at Shongweni was 00:17:57,” they said.
His memorial service will be at City Hill Church in Hillcrest on Saturday, February 18.
