Four decades of service to education
Thiru Motheeram says educators' intentions should always be to do good and serve learners the best way they can.
THIRU Motheeram’s passion for education and service to various communities has spanned a little over four decades. Inspired by her father, also an educator, Motheeram recently retired as principal of Queensburgh Girls’ High School. She spent 10 and a half years at the helm and recently spoke to Queensburgh News about her tenure at the school and her journey as an educator.
“This year, I would have been involved in education for 43 years. My passion has always been teaching, and all my best moments have been in the classroom. I loved English and that was a subject I gravitated towards and still have a passion for. I’ve also had the honour of teaching English Methodology at University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and the Edgewood campus. My father, though, was my introduction to education and someone who served as my inspiration,” she explained.

In her tenure, Motheeram has seen a growth in the number of learners at her school but also the upgrade of various school facilities, including the classrooms, an indoor sports centre, which was recently opened, and a full upgrade of the library.
“When you start on your journey as an educator, your intention is to do good work and serve the learners in whatever way you can. I’ve always strived to put the girls first at Queensburgh Girls’ High School. All of this would not have been possible without the support of my fellow staff members, the governing body and the learners. My hope is they continue to be shining lights in the communities around them,” she said.
Motheeram says she now plans on spending precious time with her two-year-old granddaughter, possibly travelling and writing.
